Corvette: Coil Spring Stabilizers in '69

Coil Spring Stabilizers in '69
I've been looking for some reason why paint cracks appear in my front
fender. I've asked questions about tires etc. I was thinking that my
tires (225-70-R15s) might cause the cracks by hitting the fender when I
turn the front wheel and hit a bump. I've been told by many people that
the cracks are most likely due to the fiberglass preparation, which I
tend to believe. However, there may be another contributor to the paint
cracks.
Although I had my suspension inspected, and I was told that it is ok, I
had it checked again by another shop. And they found that my front coil
springs had stabilizers in them. These are little inserts that are stuck
between the coils.
I didn't know they were inserted in the springs. I've been told that
stabilizers are inserted because the springs are sagging and they are an
inexpensive way to put life back into the spring. I've also been told
that new springs would most likely cause my front end to ride higher.
So, here's my question: Since my 34 year old springs needed help (in
some mechanic's opinion), is it highly probable that new springs will
cause my front end to ride higher and not bottom out?

Can you see any rub marks? I doubt this theory. Depending on where the
cracks are it could be from the tires slinging stones up and hitting the
fenders. Some glue a thin sponge sheet on the inside of the fender to
minimize the impact of stones.
Ride higher, maybe, the inserted spacers may already have it back to proper
height. You can adjust the rear up a little to get a more even stance. Keep
it from bottoming out, probably not if it does it now. New springs with no
spacers can travel further, quicker, allowing it to hit the rubber
bumpers. You must be driving it in some bad places to get it to bottom out.
How are your shocks?
Good luck,

By 'short circuiting' part of the spring, the spacers
quicken the spring rate and make for a firmer ride.
The transmission of high frequency road shock into
the frame and body is increased a bit.

I can see where the tires have made contact with the fender. The under side of
the fender has small indentations.
Can I assume that the spacers were put in to bring the front end to its proper
height, or is it possible that the spacers were put in to make the front end
higher than its proper height?
Does anybody know what the proper height for the front coil is?
They seem ok to me, and I've had them checked twice. But I might have them
checked again.
