Clutch noise - Question for MDT Tech®
The clutch on my 1997 Camry has recently started making a high pitched
metallic tapping or chirping sound. If I depress the clutch pedal,
even just an inch, the noise stops.
I searched the newsgroup archives at Google Groups and turned up heaps
of search results describing this exact problem with the Ford Mustang.
In the case of the Ford the sound is caused by a worn throwout bearing
retainer. This is the metal shaft that bolts on to the gearbox that
the throwout bearing slides along.
Is it likely to be the same part that is worn on my Camry?
I described the problem to my local Toyota dealer and they quoted me a
new clutch kit, but I don't believe the throwout bearing retainer
would be part of the clutch kit. Is there another name for this part
or should the dealer know what I'm talking about?

Well, this is a Toyota newsgroup and they don't fail like Fords! ;-) OK,
here the scoop. These new throw out bearing always run against the
pressure plate, and this make the clutch fork wiggle. What's happened is
the pivot or fulcrum for the fork is dry and needs lube. You can spray
in some Toyota White Grease (in a can from the dealer, think gooey and
stays in place, perfect for this fix) and if your familiar with the
location of the pivot, bull back the boot and give it a squirt, noise
will be gone!

nasmuch as the Democrats are complaining on how long the war is taking,
consider this:
It took less time to take Iraq than it took Janet Reno to take the
Branch Davidian compound. That was a 51-day operation.
It took less time to find Saddam's sons in Iraq than it took Hillary
Clinton to find the Rose Law Firm billing records.
It took less time for the 3rd Infantry Division and the Marines to
destroy the Medina Republican Guard than it took Teddy Kennedy to call
the police after his Oldsmobile sunk at Chappaquiddick.
It took less time to take Iraq than it took to count the votes in
Florida! TWICE!!!!!
Damn our military is GREAT!!

I came to the same conclusion after a lot of searching through the
newsgroups last night. I pulled back the dust boot but it's very
difficult to see in there and I'm not confident I wouldn't end up
spraying where I shouldn't. I think I'll just leave it for the dealer
to do at my next service.
I'm actually debating whether to get a whole new clutch, since it does
chatter a bit, but probably not enough to justify the expense.
