A $15 bottle of worn engine treatment mix added to the engine oil will
    significantly reduce the noise

I'm not much of a believer in additives but sometimes they have merit.
There used to be an oil additive from Wynns called "Engine Tune-up".
I've seen this stuff instantly quiet lifters in an engine that sounded
like a coffee can full of marbles. It really is only designed to work
on hydraulic lifters by cleaning them out, so know what you have
    before proceeding. Something to consider.
    FWIW
    YMMV

You may also want to try a good synthetic oil (Mobil One 10W-30) as well one
time to see if this helps out.

It's on page 2A-9 in my Haynes - illustrated at 5.7b. Looks fairly easy
to replace. They're called lash adjusters, and I'm not sure what they
cost. $1800 is absurd, though, unless they were quoting you for a full
top-end job, which would include new valve seats, springs, stem seals,
etc. That all requires removing the cam covers, manifolds & head. Just
to replace the lash adjusters can be done without removing the head.
