    City Navigator update?

Last year V7 (North America) was announced on June 1 and shipped in August.
I will be taking a long driving trip this summer (mid-July) and would like
to update from V6 but don't want to get V7 now if V8 is around the corner.
Any thoughts on timing for the next update?

Garmin told me some time ago that V. 8 would be released this Summer.

    But who really knows?

I use V4 and it's fine. Garmin updates their software EVERY summer so
V8 WILL BE OUT this summer.

Depends very much on where you drive. V.7 has much more info in some
areas I drive than earlier versions .. especially v. 4.

If ver 4 works great. Why upgrade.
I would hope there would be more to compare with ver 4 to 7 Were talking 3
    yrs. (One every yr)

Ver 8 is already outdated. How many streets have been created in the past
few months ? Time to compile the maps. QA the maps, Oh maybe they don't do
much QA on them. From what I've seen. Then time to press the media and
market it. 2-4 months. Lots of building and new added streets going on in
    the USA and other locations.

What needs to be done is monthly free updates. But that wont bring in cash
so that's out. As If they don't make enough on the unit at the time of sell.

Microsoft should buy them out. Maybe then we can get free upgraded software.

Nonsense. The maps are made from completely separate companies whose
business is to make maps. Are you suggesting that they donate their
    product to you?

BS Is that all you and the tvnav guy can say ? Truth hurts ?

If you want to pay for upgrades fine, do so. How many map bug fixes you seen
    from garmin ?
In the 3 yrs I've owned a garmin I've never got any. Missing streets are not
bugs when the street has been listed on city maps for 20 yrs ?

    I know I won't wont upgrade.

Quite a few where I live. Enough that if I was using v4 maps I'd be
driving on roads that don't exist and making a fair number of illegal
    left turns.

It's dependant on where you live and where you drive. Rural areas
don't see the same accuracy or update frequency as urban areas. This is
NavTeq's prioritization and is, in part, based on the availability of
reliable road data and the ability for those roads to be verified by the
map data suppliers (the road might, for example, be on your paper map,
but NavTeq might not be using the same data source). The TIGER road
feature realignment project might help with rural data accuracy but it's
still got a few years to go.

And, of course, you have reported these map errors to NavTeq, right?

Good for you. Just be careful navigating in Portland.

    Cheers,

It's generally simple enough to make the PERSONAL decision about
wlhether a specific upgrade will be beneficial to you.

Just test the new version using the viewer on line at the Garmin web
site. If you like what you see, pay the unlock fee. If you don't,
    don't.

Keep in mind, too, that points of interest are also updated in a new
    release.

In my case, I got the CN Europe v8 upgrade now although we're not
currently planning a trip in order to shift my CN US v7 and my European
maps set from my 76C to my 76Cx while retaining my primary unlock on the
2610 without having to pay for other than the CN Europe upgrade.
