Cherokee 98 - Coolant temperature on idle

What should be the approximate coolant temperature when the engine is
working on idle? Mine sets onto about 208 degrees Fahrenheit (98 degrees
Celsius) after cold start and 5 minutes of idling before I start driving. Is
this too high? Could this be the reason of somewhat rough idle and poor fuel
    economy?

For comparision, my '96 makes it's way quickly to the 100C mark (stock dash
gauge) and then the electric fan comes into play if I'm just sitting. Once
moving though, the temp drops a bit and the fan stops as it should. My
understanding, the auto engine is most efficient when the coolant is around
235 F or so (achievable because the system is pressurized). I asked my
mechanic buddy about what seemed to me to be too hot. Does it ever overheat
he asked? Well no I had to say. He recommended stick with the stock
thermostat, don't bother going cooler. In other words, if it's hot but not
    overheating, it's runnning most efficient.

But why do you idle for 5 minutes? Controversial I know, but the modern
engine does not need to idle before driving (well ok, I would not floor it
    up onto the freeway cold).

"official" jeep literature puts standard running temp at between 190
to 215 F. Above 215 the aux fan should kick on and keep it somewhat
close to that temperature. I replaced my radiator (97 Cherokee w/100k
miles) and haven't gone above 220 F under ANY conditions since I did
it and usually I'm right about 200 F.

Why are you wasting 5 minutes idling? Drive off, take it a little
easy until the temp comes up (takes very little time in a jeep) and
    then drive normally.

Rough idle could be many things but the usual culprits are spark plug
wires, spark plugs, or a vacuume leak someplace. (always check the
    cheap solutions first <grin>).
