check gauges light / Temp gauge soaring

Over the last few days I noticed my temp rising from its normal of 210 to
about 222 (first tick mark to right) usually when idling at a stop.
Yesterday the check gauge lights fires up and my temp reads 247 (3rd tick
mark to the right). I immediately pull over and before I can kill the
engine, check gauges light goes off and temp is back to 222. This happens a
few more times as I make my way home.

I've got no engine codes, no fuses blown, coolant is good, and fans are
working properly. At this point, I'm at a loss.

Any words of wisdom from the group...

    Thanks

    John

It would help a lot if we had any idea
    1) what model and year you are driving
    2) what engine it has
    3) rough idea of the ambient temperature
    4) Knowing the mileage is often helpful too.

But not knowing any of that I would check the clutch on your
mechanical fan (if you have one). Basically get the engine warm and
shut it off. When hot the clutch should bring the fan to a halt
immediately. If not the clutch is shot and your idle temps will go up
    fast.

I would also check inside the radiator for coolant flow if the flow is
not good you may need to flush things out or possibly replace the
water pump (I've seen old pumps where the impellers were corroded to
useless nubs even though the exterior looked great).

It could be a bad thermostat.

If you haven't had to replace the water pump with over
100,000 miles, I'd change that on principle along with
    the fan belt.
