Subaru: check engine light won't go off

check engine light won't go off
I own a 1998 Subaru Legacy 2.2 Wagon and
the engine light won't go off. It is being checked by computer in 2 days.
Anyone had this trouble, and what is the usual culprit??
Oil and radiator levels are full, so mechanic ruled that out. Also he
checked for loose wires. So, it is going to be checked by the computer next.

Re: check engine light won't go off
Make sure gas cap is tightly closed. This wil trigger the light.
Also, it apparently takes awhile to go away once the cap is properly
tightened.....

Re: check engine light won't go off
It takes about 10-15 start cycles to get the CEL to cycle off if the gas cap
is the culprit. ed

Re: check engine light won't go off
Well, the mechanic reset the computer code in the car and now it is ok for
now. He mentioned it may well have been the gas cap. He was nice and it cost
me $20, not bad I guess.

Or you could have removed the battery for 30 minutes for nothing.

Re: check engine light won't go off
We had a 2001 Outback CEL go on a couple of times on trips and it
eventually turned out to be some fuel delivery valve. We did a lot of
fiddling with the gas cap, before it was correctly diagnosed. We smelled
raw gas in the engine compartment (as well as from inside) at the end.
Don't know how common this is.
