Toyota: Check Engine Light 98 Corolla -spark plugs?

Hi
The check engine light came on in my 98 Corolla. My spark plugs
are at 100,000 km or 60,000 miles so they are a little overdue for their c
hange. They are not platinum, just double ground lead. Could this be my problem?

Also can I use the method below to check engine codes for my light.
