Carb recommendation for a non-stock '64
Greetings -
My '64 convertible was stolen, stripped, abused, and recovered four
years later. Since it was my wife's first car, we've been spending
the bucks to restore it to a good driver. Currently it has an
unknown-vintage 350 with an Edelbrock performer manifold and a
17080213 (80's model 49 state non-egr) Q-Jet on it.
The Q-Jet is running rich and the choke doesn't work well. I
understand they can be outstanding carbs when working well, but I'm
looking for something that I can drop in now to use the car. I'd like
to renew the Q-Jet, but it's a project for later.
Yesterda I bought an Edelbrock Performer 1406 (600cfm, non-egr,
electric choke) based on readings and recommendation from the
speed-shop guy. Bolts on fine, linkage appears to be no problem, fuel
lines are a go. BUT... there's always a but, isn't there - I have
clearance problems with both my stock(?) and Edelbrock aircleaners.
If the cleaner is raised high enough using a space to clear the
electric choke, the hood will not fully close. If I use my stock
low-clearance cleaner, it interferes with the choke and won't sit
flush. And both are bumping into the coil, but I can deal with that.
Any suggestions for a different cleaner, or a different carb? Again,
I'd like a bolt-on solution, if possible, so I can get driving again.
Sorry for the length, trying to get the details across.
TIA, Jim

Jim, go with the base from the Edelbrock cleaner if it's a 14" base, but get
a 14 inch Mr. Gasket Hi-Performance Air Filter, Part #1480A which is only 2
inches tall. Then use an Edelbrock 1/2" air filter spacer Part #8093 to
clear your linkage. This combination should just give you enough room to
close your hood.
