Dodge: Caravan computer replacement

Caravan computer replacement
After over a month trying to troubleshoot an intermittent poor performance
problem we took (actually towed for the 3rd time!) our 93 Dodge Caravan to a
Dodge dealer for repair. After hearing how their scanner was broken so they
had to borrow another dealers tool, we have now been told that we need a new
'main computer' for the van. They quoted us about $650 for the repair.
When inquiring as to the breakdown we are told it is $470 and the rest is
for the install and for "reprogramming" the new computer. Since I have
changed computers in other make/model cars before and they always
'programmed' themselves based on the vehicle's driving pattern/conditions,
we were concerned that we may be getting a raw deal here. Also, we called a
local parts store and found that an aftermarket computer for this vehicle is
only about $250. So our questions are as follows:
1. Is there any major difference between the aftermarket part and the dealer
part to warrant a $250 difference in cost?
2. Is there really some "reprogramming" that needs to be done to the new
computer, or is it really 'plug-n-play' and it 'programs' itself under
actual driving conditions.
When the dealer's service manager was questioned as to what the process is
for reprogramming he simply said "there is a procedure, we don't write the
procedure, we just follow it" That response, and the tone of it, concerned
me even more - especially since we are talking about a car over 10 years
old. Now they want over $100 for diagnosis if we pick it up without getting
the $650 repair. Does this also seem right?
Thanks in advance for any help/info.

Re: Caravan computer replacement
there is no program for that PCM (computer)
, stick it in and go>>>> i would try and stay away from the after markets,
but you need to request that the dealer give you a price for a MOPAR
reconditioned PCM

I agree. Looks like they are either clueless or are attempting to stick it
to you. Get your vehicle out of there and never go back! You might try
local junkyards, but you could just be picking up someone else's problem
there. It is easy enough to replace if you get a clunker, but is it worth
the time effort and savings?

The dealer told us today there is no such thing as a "reconditioned" unit
and all they can get is the $470 part. They also stand by the 2.5 to 3
hours labor for diagnosis, install, and "reprogramming" of the new unit.
Sounds like we picked the wrong Dodge dealer and we are out over $100 for
nothing. Plus maybe the cost of another tow out of the place. This is why
I've always hated taking a car to a dealer and even resisted it on this one.
Should always go with the gut instinct I guess.

Re: Caravan computer replacement
Swapped out the ECM with a Dodge Factory reconditioned one. This did not
fix the problem - glad I didn't pay the $600 the Dodge dealer wanted since
their "professional" diagnosis was junk!
I'm going to start a new thread with all the symptoms in hopes someone can
help.
