Corvette: car won't start

car won't start
I have an 82 corvette. The crossfire injection has been replaced with a
carbeurator. Sometimes when I go to start it, the engine cranks but there is
no spark. Other times, it won't crank at all. Sometimes it cranks, sparks,
and fires right up. I thought the wires connecting to the solenoid were
suspect, and they might be, but I'm not sure that's my problem. Any other
ideas?
Thanks,
Greg

Diagnosis via usenet is pretty shaky..that said,
it could be the ignition switch. Based on the symptoms,
voltage may occasionally not be delivered to the start
circuit or the ignition circuit, or both. At least it's
a component that shares a possible source for
both problems.

Re: car won't start
Check for the possiblity of a faulty oil pressure sending unit...if its
faulty..it could cause a no start condition.

Does this car have the HEI distributor? My 78 did the same thing and
I had to replace the pick-coil and the distributor moduel. Both are
located under the distributor cap. You can buy a new rebuilt hei
distributor from most auto parts store for around $100 or you can get
a performance one from the specialty stores. I opted to rebuild my
own. It is not too hard. I can help with info if needed.

Re: car won't start
Thanks for the replies. The car does have an HEI distributor and that sounds
the most likely reason for no spark. I'll try to find a rebuilt one and see if
that works.
I think my oil pressure switch is working properly because my fuel pump is on
only when the car is running. I say "only", and I mean it. To get the car
started, I have to remove the fuel pump relay and short two of the wires in the
connector. But once the car starts, the fuel pump stays on even after
unshorting the wires.
After tightening up the wires at the starter motor, I think (but not sure) the
engine cranks now whenever I turn the key to start. I was worried that the
intermittent spark, combined with the absence of fuel pump power, might be
computer related. But the ignition switch suggestion seems pretty reasonable.
It looks like I have my weekend cut out for me!! Thanks for the replies.

Re: car won't start
I don't think the HEI is your problem. You need the basic troubleshooting
done again.
When you go to the START position, the pump should run to get fuel to the
TBI. You shouldn't have to short the two wires. Check your wiring diagram
to find where it should be energized at and then find why it isn't working.
If you have a meter or a test light, connect it to the SWITCHED side of the
solenoid. When you hit START, the light should come on or the meter should
read 12 volts approx.
Do the same test with the 12 Volt connection on the HEI. When you hit
START, it should be on.
Your problem sound much like the ignition switch being worn out.
And if you decide the HEI is the problem, usually it isn't all of the
pieces. HEIs are tough and rarely fail anymore. That wasn't true in '75
and '76 when they came out, but 28 years later, any that would fail have
failed and have been replaced with good parts.
