I was just wondering, have you taken it to another dealer go confirm
this or at least call them up and explain your problem with the
sliding door and see what they say?

Two THOUSAND Dollars for an automatic sliding door mechanism.
Hahahhaha. Just another expensive and unnecessary gizmo to get you
to buy the van in the first place. Truly.

Is there anything unusual, like special swaged fittings on the ends?
Or is it just a chunk of 1/8" (or metric, probably) stainless aircraft
cable clamped to the drum at the ends and to a traveler for the door
    arm in the middle...

Sounds like a good cottage industry to start - "Send in your door
motor assembly and we rebuild it, for a lot less than a new motor."

That's why I wanted nothing to do with automatic doors. When researching
Vans, I read a review of the Honda Odyssey at Car Talk. Being the more
    practical types
they looked up what the motor replacement costs were for the doors. It was
over $900.00 for just the motor!! With the exception of being disabled, I
    can't imagine
why anybody would need this feature. In the 4 years that I owned our
    Sienna, never
once was myself or any passenger unable to open the door manually without
    ease.
That said, having to replace the whole unity because of a cable is
    ridiculous. Get some
more opinions, I can't believe they can't replace just the cable, you might
    just have to
find a shop with more mechanically inclined mechanics.
