Corvette: C5 tire pressure sensor problem

C5 tire pressure sensor problem
I've a '98 C5. Last winter I had to get my LR tire pressure sensor
replaced; it failed to give any reading. Now, my RR pressure sensor
is reporting 7 - 10 PSI lower than the actual tire pressure; it had
been fine up until two days ago.
Would recalibrating the sensors likely fix the problem? If so, where
can I get the tool to do the recalibration?
Or, do you folks think that the sensor is failing and will need to be
replaced.
Great system, the LTPWS, until it goes bonkers, then it's $250 per
sensor for replacements.

Re: C5 tire pressure sensor problem
I'd sure like to completely disable the Low Pressure Tire Warning System
in my '95 Coupe. Is there a way to do it easily? I wish whoever had
purchased this car originally hadn't ordered it with this "feature".....

I would sure try to retrain them first, they cost more in the $100 area
though.
Here's the scoop... the main item you need to re-calibrate (actually
it's "program the sensors" in the service manual lingo) the sensors is a
magnet to engage sensors during the training sequence. The GM tool is J
41760, but maybe a decent powered magnet with a horseshoe shape or hole in
it would suffice??? I use 2 flat magnets I got a Lowe's, about 1/2 X 3/8 X 1
1/4. Hold them in a "V" shape and place them over the stem a second or so
and remove, the horn should the toot.
Make sure vehicle has been stationary for at least 2 minutes.
1 - Ignition on
2 - Press RESET to clear all IPC messages from DIC
3 - Press and release OPTIONS, scroll till IPC is blank
4 - Press and hold DIC RESET for 3 seconds
5 - Press OPTIONS again until TIRE TRAINING message is displayed
6 - Press RESET until IPC LEARN L FRONT TIRE to begin programming
7 - Install J 41760 over left front valve stem (I guess you could try a
hefty magnet now)
8 - The horn will sound indicating LF sensor is programmed
Notice - if after 15 seconds the horn doesn't sound, remove and reinstall
tool on stem. This may have to be done up to three times in some instances.
9 - IPC will direct you to LEARN R FRONT TIRE, R REAR TIRE, then L REAR
TIRE.
Programming Cancellation:
1. Programming mode will cancel if any of the following conditions are met:
- program mode exited through DIC
- ignition turned off
- all four sensors programmed
- TPM program mode for 2 minutes with no sensors learned
2. If cancelled with less than 4 codes stored, the receiver will only accept
the codes programmed up to that point.
There you have it, good luck.

Re: C5 tire pressure sensor problem
Last time I reprogrammed mine, I used one of those magnetic sweeper sticks
(used to pick up screws off the floor in your garage before the tires pick
them up for you) $15 from Homies.

Thanks for the input. The cost I mentioned was for the entire service
to replace the sensor; you're right that the sensor itself costs
around $100. I'll probably try to retrain them myself, it's not a big
job. Have you seen instances where a low-reading sensor is corrected
by the retraining process?
Complaining to Chevrolet may be helpful; I've started a dialogue with
them and have some hope that they may assist in the replacment if
that's what's needed.

No, I've not seen a pressure correction by reprograming them.
My Goodyear Dealer swaps rims for me for $10, where do you get
the other $140 added cost? I did have a Goodyear dealer change
a rim in Toledo Ohio and they soaked me $58, avoid Capitol tire
in Toledo. I was sure that would happen when I walked in the
door and smelled vasoline, guy behind the counter was a reject
car salesman and/or burnt out on drugs or his own importance.

They are $130 at the dealer, but I have seen them on e-bay for under $25.
And re-training them works with a magnet. I used the bulk eraser I had for
wiping my pirate software off tape.

What's wrong with being burnt out on drugs? You make it sound like a bad
thing...

If it were good the government would be taxing it, so it must be bad.

The Gummint does. In fact, many states require marijuana dealers to
purchase an anonymous tax stamp and pay taxes anonymously based on sales.
If this is not done, when the dealer gets arrested the IRS comes down on
him/her.
