GM / General Motors: Buick tranny lockout

Re: Buick tranny lockout
I'm pretty sure the torque converter is not locking up completely.
With acceleration there is a vibration (almost like a slight engine
miss)but it is not the engine. If I 'disconnect' the TC by using the
brake pedal it goes away. Also, when at hiway speed using the speed
set, the TC will occasionally disengage by itself with a 'clunk'.
Thx

Yes. There should be a switch on the brake pedal that if you unplug it
will make the trans think the brakes are on and not lock the converter.
However, on a 96 I can't guarantee that won't make the computer freak
out.
Also, make sure it's not the brake light switch you're
unplugging.

Re: Buick tranny lockout
Any Check Engine light? You should probably have the system scanned for
trouble codes.
If you have a slight engine misfire, it may well be noticeable only when the
TCC is locked up, because of the direct connection between the transmission
and the engine. Also, I believe if the PCM detects a misfire, on some cars
it will try unlocking the TCC and checking again to make sure a rough road
is not inducing crank speed variations that look like a miss.

Re: Buick tranny lockout
I have a simular problem with a 1993 Buick Park Ave. Took it to local
small GM dealer and they said only thing they could find to cause the
vibration was a bent tire rim. I changed it and it was no help at all.
If someone out there knows for sure how I can isolate or be sure of what
is causing noticable vibration after I go into last gear at about 45
mpg,I sure would appreciate your help. The Buick people just seemed to
not know which surprized and disappointed me greatly. I dont know what
to when the people that should know dont know. Another mechanic said it
was the tires....new tires and balancing did not help.
