BMW: brake light circuit / brake light failure

brake light circuit / brake light failure
I have a 95 bmw 325iS. I see the brake light circuit failure and the
brake light failure. The driver side brake light doesn't work.
I figured it must be the bulb so I went and bought a bulb, installed
it and realised its not the bulb. Now I don't know if the culprit is
the bulb holder or the entire lens.
The connection on the lens looks burned out i.e. black. Needless to
say the dealer tells me to replace the entire lens which will cost a
lot. Has anyone tried just cleaning out the connection point and
soldering it ?

Re: brake light circuit / brake light failure
I'd go to Home Depot and buy a can of Contact Cleaner spray in the
electrical department. My old 89 325i had similar electrical problems with
some of the harnesses and it worked on those. Plus, its a lot cheaper than
the whole lens and if it doesn't work, you're only out a couple of buck
knowing that you tried.

What exactly is the lens ? The flat metal part the bulb casing contacts
with ?
I have a similar problem. My "brake light circuit" warning came on a week
or so ago - 1998 328i. All the lights were working, so I figured it was a
false positive, which I used to get quite frequently. Last night the
warning came on and my left/right lights were working and not working, then
working, then not working, etc. The middle light didn't work at all though.
Today I looked at the bulbs, contacts, and fuses - everthing looked fined.
The left and right lights worked fine, but not the middle. However, I
wasn't getting the warning anymore, despite the middle not working. Should
I go ahead and get the circuit replaced and all new bulbs to be safe. Or is
this too much too soon ?

then
though.
Should
is
OK, haven't gotten the "brake light circuit" warning today. But center
brake light hasn't worked. I switched bulbs and center worked and left
didn't. So there's at least a bulb problem. I figured it was better to
have the center working and one of the outer ones off, so I I didn't undo
the swap. Now I get the "1 brake light failure" message, but didn't get it
when the center wasn't working.
My question now is whether or not to go ahead and get the circuit replaced
when I go to buy the BMW bulbs. I guess that depends on whether the circuit
could have caused the bulb to go bad. But if the only problem were a bad
center bulb, why would the left/right fail to work at some times and why
would the "brake light circuit" warning come on and then not come on today
after reinstalling the bulbs.
Thanks in advance.

Re: brake light circuit / brake light failure
The tail lights are held in with 4 nuts that you can get to from inside the
trunk. Take the cover off that exposes the bulbs, and you will see the nuts.
Remove the nuts, and unplug the connector, and you can take the entire lamp
assembly off. You can clean the contacts with steel wool, and a small
jewlers file can clean the inside of the connector pins.
