Jeep: Bought a 2003 Wrangler X

Bought a 2003 Wrangler X
This is my first small jeep.
What did I buy?
How does an X differ from anything else? (Like a regular Wrangler
maybe or a Rubicon?)
I've been having fun with it. I've put about 500 miles on it so far.
We went on some back roads in Joshua Tree (Geology Road). We somehow
missed the cut-off to Berdoo, but I'm thinking this is a good thing.
An hour after we got back on the highway, we pulled off to put the top
up and the battery had died. :-)
Thanks,
Larry

Re: Bought a 2003 Wrangler X
Hi Larry,
I can't answer your Jeep question, but I too missed the Berdoo Cyn. Rd. on
the Geology Tour Rd. The reason I missed it was because the sign at the
intersection was misleading for me. I had a route in my gps to take me down
Berdoo Cyn., so I discovered my error in about a mile as my gps was showing
me off course. I then did a U turn and went the wrong way on the one-way
road for a bit and got back to the intersection without being busted by the
rangers. I think the reason the sign was misleading for me is that it did
not say "Berdoo Canyon" but had the name of some town down the road. Being
from out of state, I did not recognize that the Berdoo Cyn. Rd. would take
me to that town.
I live in the Phoenix area, and the hot weather here is murder on batteries,
so I now always take one of those 12 V power supply/jump starters with me
when I go four wheeling.

This was probably the same sign I saw. As I recall, there's a new
looking sign that simply said "EXIT" and had an arrow pointing to the
right. I took this as a pointer to exit the park. Instead it was the
way to continue the loop back into the park - exiting Geology Road.
I keep thinking what would have happened had I turned left and stalled
the jeep on the road to Berdoo. . .
This is our 4th jeep. The other 3 were Grand Wagoneers which we kept
while the kids were young. This little jeep is a lot of fun, but
doesn't disappoint. We're really used to fixing Jeeps. Not only did
the battery go, but the air conditioning lost all charge on that first
run. We've learned to take this all in stride.
I intend to be more adventurous with this little jeep, so I'm going to
be adding larger tires, maybe a lift kit, and a wench. I also forgot
to take tools with me on that first trip, which is a mistake I won't
make again :-)
I've also been reading about lowering tire pressure, then pumping them
back up again. We've never been in a situation where this was
needed, but I suppose there's first time for everything?
Is it worthwhile to find a club of some kind and go in a group?
We're in North County San Diego.

Larry

The X package means that it is the lower level Jeep but with the six
cylinder engine.

I hope you are not married, adding a wench to your car can cause marital
problems. Also, a wench has a hard time pulling the jeep up. You may want
to have a winch installed.

Re: Bought a 2003 Wrangler X
I don't know....... sometimes I think I rather have a wench than a winch. A
good wench can get you towed by the next passer by, with a winch you would
have to do it by yourself...

Re: Bought a 2003 Wrangler X
do not take "lower level" as a term meaning "crappy" just nice, with less
options : )
generally speaking, an X is intended for light duty offroading and putting
around. while it is still 4wd I believe, the axles are less "beefy" and the
overall options are reduced vs. the Sport model. the Sport in turn has a
few more options, and an option to go with the very beefy Dana axles
intended for serious offroading. The next step, which I have, is the the 03
Rubicon where all the "beefy" items such as the Dana axles, MT/R tires, MOAB
wheels(?), 4:10 gearing, 4:1 ratio are standard and you go from there adding
hard top, 6 speaker "muddy" sound and 5spd or auto trans. in my opinion
the Rubicon is overkill for anyone who will just mainly drive it around
(me). I have yet to attend a jamboree or go serious offroading yet. I will
probably sell it.

Re: Bought a 2003 Wrangler X
Larry,
Regarding your question about finding a club to go with. I think that might
be a good idea if you can find a club that has guys who want about the same
amount of "adventure" on their trips as you do. I have never joined a Jeep
club, but was part of a sand buggy club several years back, and that worked
out fairly well for me (like the time I broke the tranny, and there was
someone there to haul me back to civilization).

I've been married to the same gal for 30 years. Not sure about her
ability to pull anymore. She makes a fair supervisor though.
I might need a winch and a wench?
:-)
