Mercedes-Benz: Body/ chassis numbers

Body/ chassis numbers
How does MB choose their body/chassis series numbers? For example,
the SL series 129 replaced the 107 series. Why not the 108, or 117, or
207? In the military, series numbers are chosen by the year adopted or
by the design prototype version that was finally approved. How does MB
decide?

Among car manufacturers, the project number that often becomes the platform
designator seems to run out of order because some projects do not achieve
production status or are products most of us do not know about.

Re: Body/ chassis numbers
Occasionally there's logic:
W123 followed by W124
W115 and W116
W208 ans W209

That is a different designation system:
The system with e.g. the leading W (as
e.g. in W114) refers to the model series,
the /8 is a supplement to the trunk lid
designation system (e.g. 200) and was used
to distinguish the W114 and W115 from their
predecessors; otherwise it would not have
been clear if by e.g. saying _200_ you refer
to a 200 from the W110 series (Heckflosse/
fintail) or the new W115 series.
The /8 comes from the year of market
introduction 1968 and speaking this
combination led to _Strichacht_.
