The roof motor is about 400 US$ in Germany, the cover lid motor may roughly
be the same. Installation is a tricky thing which usually requires special
tools provided by BMW. I had my roof motor replaced two months ago and my
usual repair shop (independent) failed to do the job. Official BMW factory
dealership (2 miles away from the Munich factory) did it and charged me
more than 900 $. They had to recalibrate the complete roof, which is a task
    of several hours.

One must take into consideration that the E30 convertible was the first BMW
convertible ever made by the factory with an automatic roof mechanism. When
they did that, Mercedes did not offer this option with their cars. They
started a few years later with the R129. If I think it over, I do not
remember any german convertible of that thine which could be bought with
electrical top. AFAIK most of the convertible development and production
was done by Baur and not by the factory itself.

and do they *always* leak? my '93 cabrio started leaking a few
weeks ago, round the top of the front side windows and the 3 way join
between side windows, windscreen and roof... the rubber *looks* good
but we have had a long hot summer here in ireland so maybe its
    suffered...

These points are critical. My convertible ('92, 1st top) lets in a few
drops only if I drive through a car wash.

If the rubbers look okay, you should apply some vaseline to keep them
moist. This may help a lot. It may also be possible that your top and/or
your windows are out of alignment.
