    BMW balance/tyre pressure question

BMW advertising, at least here in the UK, often alludes to the 50-50 weight
distribution between front and rear axles on BMW cars.

Why, then, are the recommended tyre pressures on my '99 523 27psi for the
front tyres and 32.7psi for the rear tyres?

All the tyre dimensions are the same - 225/60 R15 96V.

    weight

But what difference would that make to the weight distribution? Okay, so
you're putting a bit more air into the back, which may well make it heavier,
but I'm sure it doesn't make that _much_ difference!

As Tom said, it's almost certainly to influence the handling. On every car
I've ever driven and borrowed for more than a couple of weeks, it's been
easy to influence the default handling trait by varying the tyre pressures.
The Cinquecento was the easiest to influence, almost certainly because she
was very light, and increasing the rears by two to three was enough to get a
leery oversteery slides pretty much on demand . . .
