Chevrolet: Battery cover on '06 Maxx - what purpose does it serve?

I broke off one of the tabs on this plastic piece of crap while replacing
the battery. The whole thing has become fairly brittle with age. A new one
is $33 online, but I don't understand why it's there in the first place.
Any thoughts? Seems unnecessary.
