    AX4S tranny servo cover leak

I have a 97 Sable wagon with an AX4S tranny.

My tranny has recently developed a leak. I went to an independent shop
and got the pan gasket replaced (actually, I had a damaged bolt head I
was finding impossible to extricate, went to shop, who asked me to pay
45 bucks for the extrication and another 45 bucks for filter and fluid
    change).

However, the leak is still there, and now I have been able to isolate
it and it is coming from the intermediate servo cover (the one just
above the pan on the rear side of the tranny). There seems to be a
crack (hairline) on the servo cover.

Searching the internet, I found a recall for 97 taurus and Sable, "TSB
    97S75 JUN 97 Recall - A/T Low/Intermediate Servo Cover Replacement"

    See http://classaction.findlaw.com/recall/mv/nhtsa1/files/1997/pr080697.html
    for complete details.

However, if I go to mercury owner's site and enter my VIN to find if
any recall applies, I get response that no recalls apply to my VIN.

I am certain that the my car is having the same issue listed in
recall. My car has 99K miles. Please advise if I should try to wrangle
the repair from mercury dealer for this under the recall, and what are
my chances or success getting them to repair it.

I also need to know if it is easy to replace servo cover - is it just
a matter of getting new cover and gasket, removing old one and
replacing with new - or removing the servo cover involves a lot more
    effort than that.

Appreciate your help and thanks in advance.

    Manish,

The first thing a ford/merc dealer will do before performing a recall will
be to run an Oasis report. This is a report directly from ford that tells
the dealer whether or not the vehicle is affected by the recall and
ultimately whether the dealer will be reimbursed for the repair.

You can request an after warranty adjustment however if your vehicle is more
than 5 years old or has more than 50 thousand miles (you must be the
original owner) forget about getting any help.

As far as replacing the cover let me explain what it does. The
Low-Intermediate servo cover covers the Low-Intermediate servo. This servo
operates the Low-Intermediate band. There is a tremendous amount of
pressure inside this cover when the transmission is in operation. The cover
is sealed by an o-ring and a gasket.

Replacement difficulty level depends on your mechanical ability and whether
you have a 3.0 or 3.8 liter. A merc probably has the 3.0l. The cover is
attached by three bolts. You don't have to worry about the servo falling
out. The spring tension will release and the band will rest against the
inside of the case. The proper way to remove the cover is to remove the cat
converter however if you pry the transmission forward away from the
converter you will have just enough room to remove the cover and replace.

    Hope this helps,

Thank you very much "PC PODD".

My merc is a 3.0L Vulcan. Does it make it any easier to work on. To
me, it does appear that there is enough place to work on it without
removing anything. My only concern was stuff "springing and jumping
out like jack in the box" on removing the cover.

I am the 3rd owner, so does not seem like dealer will perform the
work. I will check with them anyways.

    Manish,

Yes the 3.0L is easier to work on. You may still have to pry the trans
forward (be careful what you pry on) while you remove the cover. Use
caution not to damage the o-ring on the servo piston.

    Good luck,

Re: AX4S tranny servo cover leak

    Thanks John.

I opened the 3 bolts. Looks like only the gasket was bad, the cover
seems to be fine. However, I can't get the cover out.

When I try to pry the trans forward, should I be only trying to
compress the servo springs, or the whole transmission ? I have been
unable to budge the transmission at all.

Is it OK if i were to cut a new gasket (as I am unable to necklace the
servo cover to get the gasket in and cover isn't coming out either)
and then fit it back with High temp ATF resistant RTV sealant ? Or do
you see problems with that approach ?

Thank you very much for your help.

Re: AX4S tranny servo cover leak

You want to move the trans away from the subframe. If you tilt the cover a
    bit it will come out.

I'd prefer you attempt to do it correctly by removing the cover however if
your not comfortable removing it your idea will probably work if you make
the cut at the top. Be sure the surface is clean.
