BMW: Any back surgeons or chiropractors out there??

Any back surgeons or chiropractors out there??
20 years. For 20 long years I've dreamt of buying a BMW.
Well, I finally got one (2000 528i, 5-speed, sport package)
but I never dreamed the seats would be so damned
uncomfortable! I've owned dozens of cars and rented
countless others for long business trips in the USA and
Europe, and I've never had a problem with uncomfortable
seats. But the seats (or the seating position, or something!)
in this car make the driving experience absolute crap.
After about 30 minutes of driving, my lower back will
hurt for a couple of days ... what a bitter disappointment.
The car handles wonderfully and the engine/drivetrain is
excellent. But the seats cause me considerable lower back
pain and no amount (manual) adjustment to the
lumbar spring / seat foam is completely curing the problem.
I've tried the base seats with lumbar support and I've tried
the "comfort seats" ... they all have too much lumbar
support for my back, regardless of the positions of the
seat cushion, seat back, lumbar bladder, etc. What is it
with BMW seats?
Recaro doesn't make any seats that even come close
to matching by sand beige leather interior. Plus, I've
never been that impressed with most Recaro seats
that I've sat on (in both cars and Lufthansa airplanes).
I'm ready to have an upholstery shop remove the leather
and re-shape the foam on my sport seats, but I'm not sure
what to tell them. Because I've already re-shaped the
spring and foam such that I don't feel the lumbar pressure
anymore, but the seat is still uncomfortable. It feels
like it's making me slouch and hunch over. With
some effort I can sit up straight by sticking my stomach
out and pulling my back into a natural S-curve. But I
can only hold this for a few minutes before I begin
slouching again. I don't think I'll find anyone at an
upholstery shop that is going to be an expert
on making an anatomically correct seat for my back.
I'd like to find a doctor that knows something
about seat design, to see if he/she can pinpoint the problem
(e.g., seat back shape, cushion shape, height, tilt, etc.).
Any suggestions, especially in the southern Michigan area?
Another alternative is someone at one of the seat manufacturers
(e.g., Lear, Johnson Controls) or one of the big three
car manufacturers that knows his/her stuff regarding
seat comfort.
Thanks in advance!

BMW seats are usually praised for their superior orthopedic qualities so
your problem seems rather unique. Did you forget to test drive the car
before you bought it?

Adjust, adjust & adjust again! I found the same when I bought my 325;
thought I'd have to get rid of it but after *much* fiddling with the
settings, I got comfy. It was either that or the seat beat by back into
the correct BMW shape!

Re: Any back surgeons or chiropractors out there??
I'm a Chiropractor in NY, and think it would be unwise to give a diagnosis
through a NG! I think your best bet would be to visit a Chiro in Michigan,
preferably a NYCC, Palmer or Logan Grad. for an evaluation. I too had a 3
series 1999 BMW and also found the seats to be lousy. I get regular
chiropractic care and still even with care I noticed that long drives would
cause Lower Back discomfort! The adjustments helped tremendously, but I
ended up on long trips using a Pro-Med Lumbar support seat. I can get it for
you if you can't find it in Michigan. I hope the new 545i that I'm ordering
won't have the same issues!

It's not unique as I have the same problem with my 528 - electric memory
seats with *no* lumbar support (standard, not sports). Lumbar support
(adjustable) is an extra. I don't know of any other car that doesn't have
a contoured back for lumbar support as standard. I've added some, and no
problems now.

I have occasional back problems in the lumbar region. I acquired a 97 528i
about 3 months ago (non sport leather seats). I found the previous owner
had the drivers seat set to a very uncomfortable configuration for me. I
used all 3 memory settings constantly saving a config to M1 and tweaking it,
saving it to M2, saving a different one on M3, sometimes going back to M1
and trying it all over again, and kept tweaking to find a configuration that
fit me. It took me 2 months but I finally got my seat to where its comfy
for me and I have quit screwing with it. Have you sat in a 5-series with
the non-sport seats?

Have you got adjustable lumbar? It's an extra and makes all the difference.

My 528i does not have the adjustable lumbar support. I managed to find a
decent setting and but occasionally still tweak it a bit. The only vehicle
I've owned with adjustable lumbar support was my 79 244DL Volvo.

the back seat not dropping to extend the boot are the only real gripes I
have with my 328. The pedals are too far to the right (right hand drive)
with the clutch pedal centre of the steering wheel. And the steering wheel
is to the left of centre of the seat. This results in some lower back
discomfort over long journeys as you seem to be twisted at the waist. Why do
they do this? I had a Renault that was the same but every UK car I have had
has been aligned straight.

My Dad's '76 242DL had it too. So did the 780. Funny, the '76 had electric
overdrive, multiport fuel injection, overhead cam, dual diagonal 4 wheel
disk brakes, 4 wheel independant suspension... not bad for almost 30 years
ago. Neat cars really.
Every E32 I've been in so far (735i, 735iL, 740iL, 750iL) has power lumbar
support.
Kind of wish my E30 (non-sport heated manual cloth seats) had it, but oddly
I don't have any back issues in this car even on long trips, though I have
in many others in the past. Normally by the end of a trip I have lumbar
support cranked to maximum.
