Corvette: Another (dumb) shifting question

Another (dumb) shifting question
Is shifting into a gear basically clutch in, gas off? I don't want to
'speed shift' (or maybe I do) or any of those other fancy things I
read about as I searched Google. But it seems you loose a lot of
momentum between 1st and 2nd when you let the gas pedal all the way
up. 2nd to 3rd is not as bad. 3 to 4, 4 to 5 and 5 to 6 are hardly
noticable.
Also, downshifting. Book says you can skip a gear. So I have been
doing that. But sometimes you come on a light change quick and don't
have time to go back through the gears. I put it in nuetral and hit
the brakes.
Happily, the 1 to 4 thing stopped f**king with me. So I've learned
something over the past few months.
You have to excuse me. I really don't know the 'correct' way to shift.

Re: Another (dumb) shifting question
As the clutch goes in you roll off the gas, as the clutch is released you
roll on the gas.. clutch being pushed in, gas pedal coming up, the faster
you shift then in proportion is your input to the gas pedal. hope that
helps, believe me it will soon get to be natural and you won't even think
about it.

Re: Another (dumb) shifting question
Back when brakes were lousy, a good example was the old XK120 which were
prone to fade quickly, using the gears to slow before a corner was routine.
Use you brakes to slow -- cheaper than a clutch, but make sure you are in
the right gear before going into the corner -- don't go thru in neutral or
too high a gear. Coming up to a light -- no reason not to put it into
neutral and coast up to the light and use your brakes to stop.
With all of the torque you have in a Vette you can be in the wrong gear and
get away with it. In a high HP 4 banger like a Honda S2000 -- got keep it
up on the cams which means rpm.

Re: Another (dumb) shifting question
Coming up to a light I often shift from 4th directly to second. Slows the
car quick and sounds great with the side pipes
