Advice on Jeep for son ...

My son wants a Jeep for his 1st vehicle. We are wanting to stay under $5000.
I am technically unfamiliar with the entire line. I am looking for some
advice as to some of the following to help make a better informed decision:

What model? I am assuming Wrangler, but WHICH one?
Was there any year , within our price range, that was more reliable or not?
    4cyl v 6cyl? I am leaning 4 because of mileage, but I don;t know if the 4cyl
    engines were as reliable.
Any other thoughts/advice on buying a JEEP?

    THanks,

    Phil

If you are looking at the smaller jeeps, 1986 and before will be a CJ, 88
to 95 will be a YJ, and 97 and up will be a TJ, my suggestion for your price
range would be a 95 YJ with 6 cyl preferrably, gas between 4 and 6 cyl isn't
much different in a jeep, a square block on wheels. If you start looking at
TJs you would want to stay with 98 and up but that would be out of your
price range. A 96 6cyl might be abit higher then 5 grand too. If you go
earlier in the YJ line try to stay 91 and newer for the 6cyl as it is fuel
    injected.

How are they to work on? I remember being in High School and many of us
worked on our own vehcles because we could. Are the engines and space such
that work is feasable, or are they pretty much specialty items that a
persone needs to "know jeeps" to be able to work on them?

The picture I have in my mind is like the Harley Davidson's of years ago,
cult like following, but you had better be a pretty good "Harley" mechanic
or you could find yourself stranded a decent bit.

I would say stay in the YJ 91 - 95

the Inline 6 Cylinder will reach 200,000+ Mi before a rebuild

    Areas of failure:
    AC
    Cooling system
    rear main seal
there will be blow by (oil on air filter)
Exhaust mainifold will crack if made by jeep
    Fule pump
owww check the front hub bearings

Jeeps are money pits, but sooo much fun to drive!

My son wants to date Tyra Banks. I recomend a safe beater for a first
vehicle, preferably a used Sherman tank. I'd be leary of cutting a 16 yr
old loose in a vehicle with no roof, and removable doors, and a high center
    of gravity.

If you teach your kid that a jeep is not a sports car then you'll have no
    problems.

Stay away from high lifted vehicles (stay with 3" lift and under") if you
can afford it go for the 98 or newer (TJ). they have a smoother ride(coil
suspension) and have airbags. If you have to go with YJ models, stick with
92-95. These models have the full cage roll bar. As far as engines, go
with the 6cyl you'll probably get better milage than with the 4cyl. Both
engines are reletively easy to work on. Get the aftermarket manuals and
    have fun.

If you care about your son, a jeep should not be his 1st car. I would
    consider Lincoln Towncar

I've had my Wrangler since I bought it new in 1991. It now has 322,000 miles
on it and wouldn't sell it for anything (almost).
I've rebuilt everything but the body and frame.
Now, with that said, you should be able to get a good deal on a 94-96
Wrangler YJ (leaf sprung suspension) or a 97-2000 TJ (Coil sprung
suspension). Much newer and you'll pay a lot more.
It's an odd thing with Jeeps, the 4 cylinder doesn't get substantially
better mileage; maybe 2-3 mpg better. You will save $ on the purchase,
    however.

In the long run, I would recommend a 6 cylinder soft top w/ half doors.

And one other thing, I gave my son a Jeep as his first car. Unfortunately,
he totaled it after three months. He's fine thanks to a full frame and roll
bar. Me and a friend resurrected the Jeep and it now lives as my wife's
daily driver, it's pretty hard to kill a jeep.

    And the movie:

On second thought, maybe a Lincoln Towncar would be a better choice....

If that was an easy thing, then teens wouldn't have any more accidents than
    adults.

My parents did this. On my 16th they bought me an 8 year old Cadillac
convertible. Engine and power windows needed a little work, it was HEAVY and
SLOW. But a world of fun.
