Ford Explorer: Accelleration Issue

Accelleration Issue
My 97 Ford Explorer (v6, 4door) with 68K miles can be floored going up
a hill and can hardly reach 50 mph - but if I use my finger on the
cruise control, it drives as it should and as it used to do with the
pedal. Any ideas what's gone wrong? My mechanic could not find a
problem - especially because it's hard to find hills in downtown
Washington DC that he can test it on going that fast.
Thanks,
David

The cruise control and accelerator pedal have separate linkages to the
throttle. There has to be something wrong with the cable from the pedal to
the throttle. Is there a lot of free play in the pedal? Check it at both
ends. Remove free play.

Re: Accelleration Issue
I agree with Sky, the accelerator cable could also be partially broken,
leaving a few strands and some slack in the cable.

Re: Accelleration Issue
And to check the throttle cable, with the motor OFF, we can remove the air
intake duct, have an assistant hold the foot feed to the floor and observe
the throttle blade. Davids tech should know this......
