Pontiac: ABS Not Working- Follow Up

ABS Not Working- Follow Up
I Posted a question a few days ago about the ABS brakes and the dash
brake/abs lights not working in my Sunfire a few days ago and got
several helpful responses. I like to get a little more information. I
took the car to my mechanic yesterday. He hooked it up to his computer
and according to the computer there is power going to the ABS
silnoid(?), but not out of it. He checked all the sensors and all are
fine. He the thinks the silnoid may be stuck open, he said the
computer shows that the dash abs/brake lights sould be on which means
either the bulbs were pulled or are burnt out. He has a few more
things to check, but said if its the silnoid its around 1000.00 to
replace. Is this price in the balll park? Any other thing I could
suggest he check?
Thanks
John

bah, you don't need ABS.

Re: ABS Not Working- Follow Up
Sounds like you were taken by whomever sold you the car. I'd go after them,
since the ABS system is part of the brake system

Re: ABS Not Working- Follow Up
Until you hit something, and then the insurance company tells you to get
bent for disabling a safety device.

Re: ABS Not Working- Follow Up
So what would happen if you drive a car that does not have ABS as an option?
Don't drive or find another insurance company or suit the car company?
Forget about insurance company. It is your life that you are talking about.
Fix it if it interference with your normal braking system or remove the fuse
(meaning remove this ABS option.)

Re: ABS Not Working- Follow Up
Obviously, if a vehicle was not manufactured with ABS, an insurance
company will not refuse otherwise entitled compensation on that note
alone. But on cars so equipped, disabling it is a good way to get in
trouble if one should be involved in an accident. And it's not just
*his* life, as you state; if he hits your wife and kills her, maybe then
you would wish you hadn't advised he disable a safety feature. It takes
an effort for a driver to become accustomed to ABS brakes and many don't
like them, I understand; I don't like them either, and I don't own a car
ever available with the system. But the feature *does* decrease stopping
distances, and that translates to a reduction in collisions. Not to
insult anyone here, but the sad fact of the matter is most drivers just panic
and swerve/jam the brakes to the floor at any emergency situation. Sorry
to be the asshole.

Case in point (mine). If you disable the ABS "safety feature" and are then
involved in an accident, whether you are at fault or not, the insurance
company will deem it a contributory factor and refuse to pay part, if not
all, of the damages.

Question: how did the insurance company find out that you disabled the
ABS? I'm guessing your car was totalled and they actually examined the
car and discovered this? And how were they able to tell that it was
intentional, rather than, say, a cable coming loose with the force of
the impact?
