Dodge: 98 Caravan - Bearing Problem?

98 Caravan - Bearing Problem?
I have a 98 Grand Caravan with a 3.8 Liter engine. When I start it cold, it
knocks a little until the oil pressure builds, then it is quiet. As it
starts to warm up, it remains quiet, even under load, but when I rev it up
to about 2000 RPM and release the throttle, it makes the knocking sound
while the engine is decelerating. As soon as it reaches an idle, it is quet
again. This cycle is repeatable. As it heats up more, the knock gets
worse, to a point where it is there even at an idle. When it is hot, it
also raises a Low Oil Pressure Alarm.
Do these symptoms sound like a rod bearing problem, main bearing problem or
something else?
Also, I want to compare oil pressure in its current condition to what it is
after I change bearings, if that is what I do. Is there a way to display
the oil pressure value through the dash electronics? Or do I need a special
tool (or mechanical gauge)?
Thanks.

Re: 98 Caravan - Bearing Problem?
I have heard the term "piston slap" but don't understand exactly what it
means. Could you please explain what it is and how it could cause low oil
pressure?
Thanks!

Re: 98 Caravan - Bearing Problem?
Piston slap does not cause the oil lite to come on, oil lite coming on
causes lack of lubrication, and that causes engine noises, if it isnt all
ready to late, you may want to have the oil pressure read. sounds to me
like you may have a rod bearing or a wrist pin problem.

Re: 98 Caravan - Bearing Problem?
Glenn,
Thanks for the feedback. Is there a way to display the digital value of oil
pressure through the dash display somehow? We had a Ford Aerostar that
would let us do that, but I don't know about this van. If I get a gauge,
where can I attach it to check the pressure?
Thanks,
Steve

Glenn,
Thanks for the feedback. Is there a way to display the digital value of oil
pressure thtough the dash display? We had a Ford Aerostar once that would
let us do that, but I don't know if this van will support that. If I get a
gauge, where would I hook it up? Is there a plug near the oil filter maybe?
Thanks for your help.

Re: 98 Caravan - Bearing Problem?
No, even if there were able to display it you wouldnt want to take that
reading as a good one, faulty sensors, bad wiring could give a false
reading, you would have to have the oil sending unit removed and install a
mechanical gauge at the port coming out of the block ,its easy to do
assuming you have the gauge, I wouldnt suggest driving it because engine
damage will occur

Your description is a textbook case of worn rod bearings..
May have been caused by long term mild detonation, lack of maintenance,
or a few other things. How many miles on it?
If you decide to get it fixed, you might as well do the mains too, and a
new oil pump. Your oil pressure must be less than 10 lbs. at idle,
because that's where most of those sensors trigger the light. That's not
good... especially if you keep driving it that way.

Noise on deceleration... sounds like scored pistons to me... ..
Light.. could be a lot of things.. including what it is supposed to
indicate..
Take it to someone you trust.
