Jeep: 96 Grand Cherokee keeps blowing the igntion fuse?????

96 Grand Cherokee keeps blowing the igntion fuse?????
I have a 96 Grand cherokee that keeps blowing the igntion Fuse under the
hood its a 40 amp.
Has only happened twice both.months apart.
At first I thought the wife overloaded it. Started it with everything on .
....heaters wipers lights etc.
This time the only thing on was the radio.
Only other thing is maybe........we have a after factory car starter but
that seems to work good most of the time.
Anybody have any ideas???

If you are blowing the 40amp fuse there is either a lose connection between
the fuse and the starter or there is a short in the same circuit possibly a
bad winding in the starter. Check all connections and have the starter
megged.

The starter is not fused.

The starter is not fused. You are probably shorting somewhere, possibly
the solenoid, or along the path to it, through the ignition switch. Seems
like if a single device was shorting, its fuse would blow too, so it is
probably something unfused.
Can you tell when it blows? Does it go when engaging the starter or when
just turning the key on?

Re: 96 Grand Cherokee keeps blowing the igntion fuse?????
Not entirely correct, however if the starter solenoid or the starter itself
has a lose connection or a bad winding it will cause the starter relay
circuit to over heat and sometimes short out hence the blown fuse. Also,
there is a fusible link on the starter up near the battery hence it is
fused.

Re: 96 Grand Cherokee keeps blowing the igntion fuse?????
Not sure wife was driving it both times.........probably when the starter
goes to engage. Very cold and rainy here today tommorow I'll get back under
it and look for more loose wires or shorted ones.
thanks Brian

I should have said not fused on a 40!
You sure about the fusible link? My positive cable goes to the solenoid,
then to the starter. It is just a regular cable.

I've seen both straight cable and fuselinks on various XJ's, it's like

that some of the fuselinks looked like plain cable until you examined
it more closely with a flashlight. I would start checking things for
cracked insulation/metal contact because it really sounds like an
ignition short somewhere close to the starter. As someone else
mentioned a badly wound starter can do this too.

Not sure of each particular year but and you may not have a fusible link.
The fusible link looks like bulge in the cable, most of the later models it
is hid under the wire mold.

Re: 96 Grand Cherokee keeps blowing the igntion fuse?????
If this is the 40 amp fuse formally known as the ignition fuse, the
starter motor relay is not in the direct path. The starter relay
fuse should be a 30 amp one, with the disclaimer I have a 95 service
manual. It could be the fuel pump just starting to drag and
overcurrent a bit.
If you can pick up a factory service manual from techauthority, do so,
the aftermarket ones "sorta lack accuracy" in some of their wiring
diagrams.
Might be worth checking the steady state draw on the circuit if you
can find a big enough ammeter.
