    96 Cherokee overhead console

I recently purchased a '96 Cherokee (not a Grand Cherokee). It did not come
with an owner's manual. In the space between the sun visors, there is a
plastic cover with only a black dime sized dome protruding from it. It
doesn't look or act like a push button. What is that? The car only has one
overhead light behind the front seats. Would I be able to install an over
head console or dome light from from a newer Cherokee into my '96? Jeep
gave the Cherokee interior a significant makeover in '97. Has anyone tried
to retrofit any of those items in the earlier interior?
    Thanks.

    I'm thinking it's a photocell.

The dome is a receiver for the keyless entry. In compairing my 97 &
92 XJ's, the overhead console will have to come from a 96 or earlier
XJ. The 97's and newer are a tad more rounded body wise to include
the roof lline, where as the 96 and older are more square/boxy. It's
also possible that the wiring harnesses are different too, Especially
when it comes to the on-board temp/mpg display within the overhead
    console.
