    96 Cherokee 4.0 making oil ???

My 96 Cherokee 4.0 and 4wd with 80k miles on it has suddenly started
leaking oil and the dip stick shows over full. The dealer who has changed my
oil every 3 months tells me (in phone conversation) that it wasn't over
filled and that something has to leaking/seeping into the crank case. The
oil on the dip stick is clear (not cloudy) and doesn't smell of gasoline.

Tell me I'm not nuts. What else except for being over filled could cause
this. I'm going in Monday to have it out with them. RM~

Well, if it doesn't smell like gas and doesn't look like milk, they had to
have over filled it. No two ways about that one.

to have over filled it. No two ways about that one.<<< Marc

Thanks, I needed to hear that from someone else. This is the second oil
change in a row that I've had this problem. I didn't catch the first one
until it was almost time for another oil change. I took it in this last
    Tuesday
(3 days ago) and told them about the problem and they told me that it should
quit leaking after they changed it and put in the correct amount of oil. I
pulled the dip stick today after noticing that the leak had not stopped and
found the oil 3/4 inch over the full mark on the stick again. I called the
service manager and he told me that it wasn't over filled when it left there
and if it was over full now that I had to have something leaking into the
    crank case.

Whish I had one that would make gasoline, I could live with that. ; )
    Thanks, Rob Mills

Appears to be mostly from rear main seal and somewhat from the front. It
never leaked a drop until after the oil change in October. RM~

May sound silly, but I have to ask. Is the vehicle level when you check the oil?

    the oil?<<<

Yes it's level and we figured out that the local jeep dealer had over filled
it back before Xmas. I didn't discover it until about the end of January. I
took it in and explained the problem and told them that I also wanted a
brake job and they told me that they were sorry and would drain it and
refill it and do my brake job. I took it home and a few days later noticed
that it was still leaking oil so I pulled the dip stick and it was still way
over full so I called the shop and told them what was going on and they said
that's impossible, it has to be taking something else (water) in. I told
them no it was pure clean oil. I took it back in and they agreed that it was
just over filled and that the oil drain and refill got over looked due to
some confusion while doing the brake job.
I have dealt with this dealer since buying the vehicle in 96 and have never
had any problems with their service dept so I am just considering it an
honest mistake. I will from now on pull the dip stick after having an oil
    change. RM~

Good deal, glad to see it's resolved. I have a 95, and it takes six
quarts. I don't trust anybody to do my oil changes, because now days,
it's all done with bulk oil, they set a dial, and fill it. I also have
heard too many horror stories about loose drain plugs, loose filters,
    etc,.

I'm thinking this was the problem, he probably set it with his eyes closed.
Guess I still get some of the blame for not checking it before I did. I was
just used to it not using any oil. It has about 82k on it and I have changed
the oil every 3 months since it was new and I put in a new drain plug in
about once a year. It seldom gets used in four wheel drive but I usually put
in in about once a month going up my son's drive (about 1/4 mile) to keep
    things stirred up.
This has been the most reliable vehicle that I have owned in 50+ years of
driving and have never driven one past 80 - 85K but plan to take this one
till it falls on it's face. I say that with confidence as I know of three
other parties who have driven them over 200k. RM~

PS, If they hadn't quit making that 4.0 engine I probably would be thinking
    "trade" about now.

I used to do jiffy lube and the guy in the pit did not put the
filter on right... Started the truck! He ended up coated with
    oil from head to tail!

    Funny as hell!
