Talk about good timing on this one.
My brother has a 2002 Cherokee with a 4.0 in it. I checked the oil on
it the other day, it hadn't run in about 12 hours. Well, the oil was
over the max. mark by about a quater of an inch, so I clean the stick
and check it again, same thing, and my driveway is pretty level. So I
bring it back to Jiffy Lube, where he has it changed all the time.
This is like three minutes later, and they check it, the level is now
down to the top of the max. mark, about a quater of an inch lower. I
assured them I wasn't crazy and asked if they would drain some of the
oil out so it was in the normal range, which they did. We checked the
level and it was now below the max. mark, I checked it a few hours
later and it was higher. So it looks like quite a bit of oil lays up
in the top end of these engines, and takes some time to drain out. My
advice, when the oil is filled, have them shoot for the mid level in
the operating range, run the engine for a few minutes, shut it down,
and check it later. Too much oil is not a good thing.

Your speaking to one, mine has 225k. I've owned it since new, it
doesn't burn a drop of oil, leaks a tad. I've given it decent service,
but not what you'd say was great, or unusual, just change the oil
every 3 to 5k, etc. I've had to replace the radiator, serpentine belt,
and the water pump. That's it. real easy to work on, etc. I'm very
worried that I may have to have a new vehicle in another 100k!!!!!

how long have you had this cherokee??? i have 96 cherokee sport i do my own oil changes and my dipstick will show over
filled but i do not think it 3/4 inch over but could be have not measured. 4.0 h.o take six quarts of oil and i leak oil but it does not
shows low.(i guess jeep being cheap and used off the shelf dipstick) if your filter has oil on it the o-ring is bad(between the block and oilfilter bracket)
change the oil yourself tobe totally sur that dipstick is reading wrong.
if you think that is bad check your exhuast manifold. if there is braided(flex) tubing build onto it
count your blessings. if it looks like a header(all tubing) save some dollars.
$300 if you are a do-it-yourselfer
$700 if you are not
MONGO
Tell me I'm not nuts. What else except for being over filled could cause
this. I'm going in Monday to have it out with them. RM~
