Mitsubishi: '95 Mirage intake questions....

Can anyone explain to me the technical aspects of the intake meter box,
i.e., what is the purpose of the round opening below the inlet to the air
meter in the airbox?

Thank you! I was refering to the tube-like opening in the bottom 1/3-1/4 of
the airbox(I was told it is a resonator), but your info is greatly
