Jeep: 95 GC Won't Start

    95 GC Won't Start

So my 95 GC won't start now. Ran fine yesterday. Security light is NOT
flashing so I know it's not that pain in the ass. It turns over just fine.
The voltmeter looks a bit low, between 11 and 12 volts, but since it turns
over fine and everything lights up good, I'm sure it's getting voltage, plus
    it turns over just fine.

I checked the coil wires and distributor cap and it looks intact. I'm
pretty mechanically inclined but am at a loss of where to start. I suppose
first things first I need to check to see if it's getting spark. I know the
old trick of pulling a plug and grounding it but don't really like to do
    that for safety reasons.

    Any ideas here?

    Thanks,
    Bill

Oh crap...never thought of that...how would I test that? Pull the hose
coming out and turn the ignition on?

I was thinking you might check the resistance across the leads.
If the resistance is infinite, you have an open circuit (broken wire in the
    winding).

Your idea should work as well, but be careful. Gas and sparks don't mix
    well.

Did you check the fuses? It probably isn't them, but it's way to easy to
    check not to start here.

Also because it's easy to check, pull a spark plug wire and check for a
spark using a spare plug (any size will do if the cable fits it, like one
    from a lawn mower).

You didn't mention the engine you have. Check the crank position sensor
(CPS). The 4.0L will have this but I'm not sure off hand if the V8 does. It
will be on the bellhousing. That can definitely cause the problem you are
seeing. That provides the signal to fire the injectors and can manifest as a
fuel problem. I have a '90 XJ and it did the same thing. CPS was the fix.
    About a $30 part.

The TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) on the throttlebody can also cause
    heartburn so check that too.

Okay...it's not getting any spark. I guess I need to now start working
backwards. Since the SECURITY warning is not lit, I'm assuming that it is
not the problem. I'll be in the garage and checking back from time to time.

    Thanks,
    Bill

Replaced cap, rotor, coil. Still no spark.

    Ideas?

Okay, have voltage going to the coil, no voltage at the cap. Somebody told
me there was a control something or other in the distributor body.

    Ideas?

I've been told it's the crank position sensor. Where the hell is that?

You should be able to hear the pump for a coupla seconds when you
    turn on the key.

Unless the pump is totally dead, you should get *some* firing when
cranking. You can drop a spoonful of gas into the throttle body if
you are careful...that will give at least a couple firing cylinders.

You might want to try a small neon bulb to see if you are getting
spark...which would make the crank position sensor high on the
    list of suspects.

And get a battery charger to keep the battery from going dead while
    troubleshooting the rest.

Any trouble codes if you do the three-key off on cycles?
