    94 Caravan C/V joint change ?

I have a 94 Dodge Caravan LE with about 60K miles. When turning right or
left, a clunking noise can be heard and felt. I am sure it's the constant
velocity bearings. ("U" joints) in the front axels. How difficult a job is
this to do? Are there any special tools required for it? Anything special to
look out for? Thanks in advance.

You can do it yourself in about an hour or two. Best to get a Haynes
manual for the procedure, but to summarize:

    1. While on ground, loosen axle nut - takes big socket & big handle!

    2. Jack up car on the problem side & support.

    3. Remove wheel.

    4. Disconnect caliper from spindle - 2 bolts. Swing it off to the side
and support it with a coat hanger hooked to anything you can find
(just so it's not dangling by its weight on the brake line).

    3. Loosen anti-roll bar from chassis to take off tension. You may have
to do both sides. No need to disconnect - just loosen chassis
brackets. Also, this might not be necessary if you have the car on
    a lift.

    4. Disconnect ball joint from lower control arm - carefully so you dont
    rupture the joint boot.

    5. Swing strut outward, push axle inward through loose spindle, then
pull axle assembly outward to remove from transaxle.

You can buy complete axle assemblies (new joints & boots all put
together), guaranteed for life, from Advance Auto or Autozone for around
$75 for these Caravans. They'll want your old one in trade.

To install, just reverse the procedure, taking care to properly torque
all nuts & bolts, including the wheel nuts (the #1 cause of brake disk
    warpage).

ive found that normally taking off the axle nut ... then removing the
lower ball joint will allow the whole strut assembly to pull out and
pivot at the tie rod. this will normally give me enough room to remove
the cv joint. also make sure you check a haynes or whatnot to make sure
nothing will be in the way or needs to be done that specific to your
    vehicle.
