93 Grand Cherokee front end problems

My front end just started vibrating at 80+ km/h. It is a manual 5-speed
with the straight six. I took it in and got the tires balanced and the
front end checked and nothing was spotted. Two days later I put it into
four wheel and I heard a dull thumping noise from the front end. It stops
as soon as I put it back into two wheel drive.

I am going to take it back in with this new revelation but before I do does
anyone here have any idea what it could be? Thanks!

Do a search on "death wobble" and see if that helps. I have a mild
vibration at exactly 70mph that I have been trying to track down for
    months now.

That thumping noise may be your cardan joint (a double U joint on the
    front driveshaft).

I'm sure others can help too. I'm too foggy with allergy meds to keep
    giving advice today <sigh>.

    Try posting in rec.autos.makers.jeep+willys.

Would love to see you in there too, Drifter.
