    ’93 Eclipse Tranny

    1993 Eclipse, 1.8, 5 speed manual tranny.

Well, I try to save a few bucks by replacing the drive shafts, due to
blown CV boots/joints. How hard could it be, right? Just slip out the
old ones and slip in the new ones.

Everything went smooth; exactly by the book. On the first test drive
I went around a corner, felt the tranny pop a couple of times, then
start making a whirring sound. After 1 or 2 more blocks it was
completely slipping. Now if I put it in any gear I can hear something
spinning in the tranny, but absolutely no power is put to the wheels.
    What could possibly have happened?

    Any help is appreciated.

It was a poorly manufactured replacement driveshaft. The splines in
    the CVJ were spun smooth.

    Thanks anyway

    I'll tell you what happened.

The axle ends are not fully engaged in the end of the shaft knuckle.

The exact same thing happened to me when working on the same car (93 1.8
    liter) a few months ago.

If you put the car in gear and watch the axle shafts, you'll see that the
one (that is disconnected) is turning, the other is not.

If you replaced the boots yourself, you didn't get them pressed in far
enough. Take it apart, clean up the grindings in the end of the knuckle and
replace the grease. It should be OK yet.

If you bought them from a shop, they did it wrong and you'll need to remove
the bad one and get it replaced.
