'88 Wrangler - What makes it spark ?
'88 Wrangler 2.5L, 4cyl, carburated.
Replaced the battery, and in the process apparently knocked or pulled
something loose, now it cranks but doesn't start. I tried to test for spark
by hooking a timing light to plug #1, it's not even flickering at all.
I tried tracing the ignition system per the Haynes manual, can't get there
from here - The Haynes manual indicates there should be a pickup module
inside the distributor, there isn't. Nor is there an older style points and
condensor. There's not even a vacuum advance or centrifugal advance that
Haynes indicates should also be there on the distributor.
So if there's no pickup, and no points, what fires the coil ?

Re: '88 Wrangler - What makes it spark ?
On my '88 there is a pickup on the flywheel housing.
Also look down below the battery tray as there's a relay down there and you
may have disturbed a couple connections.
Hope this helps.

Check your crank position sensor.. I am pretty sure that without a good
signal from the CPS, the ignition system will not spark. Try over in
rec.autots.makers.jeep+willys for more information.

Thanks for all the help. I'll check the CPS and look for the relays
under the battery box in the morning.
Funny, I've got both a Haynes Manual "Jeep Wrangler'87 thru'95" and a
Chilton manual "Jeep Wrangler '88-'90", neither one mentions such
things, they both indicate the sensor is in the distributor.

Very likely I could be wrong, Fred. Not sure if the carbed 2.5L even has a
CPS..
All fuses/relays good? Are you getting power to the coil?
