Chrysler: 87 Dakota starting-shifter linkage

My V-6 automatic will not start unless I play around with the column shifter
moving it up and down and back into park until it catches. It does however
always have a click sound when I turn the key but that's it, doesn't start
until I move the shifter up and down etc. Ant idea if there is an adjustment
for this and where it might be.?
