87 4.0 litre keeps destroying serpentine belt
Hello people,
I have a ' 87 XJ Wagoneer, 4.0 litre engine with 157.000 miles on it. It is
in top condition
and I have no complaints about this beautifull car.
Except that de serpentine belt once in a little while keeps getting damaged.
What happens is dat a 5mm part of the belt is being teared off on the engine
side,
it almost seems that the belt moves that 5 mm backwards to the engine and
that somewhere
touches the engine where it gets teared off. Eventually ending up being
winded around the fan.
If I cut this piece out, I can travel further with no troubles.
I have tried to adjust the pulley on the steeringpump, with no result. It
cost me more then 4 belts.
Is there anything else to adjust which can solve this problem.
Thanx, Rob

Re: 87 4.0 litre keeps destroying serpentine belt
You are describing a failed harmonic balancer. This is under the bottom
pulley and has a rubber center that wears out occasionally.
If you look close at the bottom pulley, you should see a little wobble
or chunks of rubber out of place.

I will look into it, the balancer has been replaced at 90.000 miles.
Seems so soon for it to fail.
Thanks for the reply.

I also found a cracked pulley on my power steering pump that was
eating the belt but the hb was the main culprit.
