Too flashy for me, but that matched my wife's suggestion - she's the
sensible one.

"Jon & Cindy" <att.net> painstakingly pecked in
news:irx7b.135814$ops.worldnet.att.net:
The trim is rolled stainless, not chromed. The "paint" is injection-molded
synthetic rubber (neoprene, I think). The rolled stainless is placed into a
mold, which is injected with the rubber, very thinly coating the piece.
The rubber has shrunk and hardened with time and sunlight. Unless you
remove the trim, strip off the rubber and recoat it, there is nothing you
can do.
Most paint does not stick very well to stainless. McDonald's had to anodize
their "McPizza" ovens black because they could not find any other durable
coating for the stainless.
Perhaps you could find an electroplating shop willing to anodize your trim
for you. You'd have to remove all plastic clips, endcaps, etc., first.
