67 327 Flat Cam Advice Needed
Hello All!
I'm helping a friend who owns a 67 Corvette with the 327 engine that has a flattened
exhaust lobe, and being a Ford guy, I have some questions about what it's going to take to
get this car up and running good again.
1. How can I tell if the engine is supposed to be the 300 hp or 350 hp version? I believe
the engine is not original. Is there a code on the body's VIN?
2. Is the only difference between the 300 and 350 versions the cam? If so, will putting a
350 HP cam into a car supplied with a 300 HP engine affect the resale value of the car?
3. Does the oil pan come off easily? I've not seen the underside of this car yet.
4. What are some good sources for new cams that replicate the factory specs?

The obvious difference is the aluminum intake and aluminum valve covers on
the 350 hp. However, so many put an aluminum intake and the Corvette
aluminum valve covers on, don't use that as an indicator.
If the tach is original, the 300 hp had a 5300 redline and the 350 hp had a
6000 redline. Of course, the 390 hp and 400 hp 427 also had the 6000
redline.
No codes on the body, unless you have the tank sticker. This is the option
sheet that was glued to the top of the gas tank during the assembly process.

The 300 hp has an iron intake manifold and stamped steel valve covers and
the 350 hp has an aluminum intake with finned aluminum Corvette valve
covers.
Most people will never know the difference, many would actually prefer to
have the 350 hp cam, and unless the car is in the 90 point or above category
in NCRS or Bloomington Gold judging, this will not make a difference.

Yes. The trick is to drop the idler arm on the steering link. This allows
the link to be "Veed" downward to give the room needed to drop the pan.

A lot of cam makers create the 350 hp cam. It is also known as the L79 cam,
p/n 3863152. It is no doubt discontinued at Chevy. Lift is .447 inches but
the way Chevy measured ramp clearances the duration are meaningless from
them. They are roughly 280 deg for intake and exhaust.
The 350 hp 350 which is also the L82 cam is p/n 3896962 c/n 3896964 but
probably discontinued also. Some like it better, although they were nearly
the same.
Many today prefer the L82 cam as it is a broader range of power and is still
got that '60s punch.

Maybe I should add some more info to that last post...
It has the alum covers and intake, so it's either the 350 model, or the previous owner
changed it to resemble the 350 model...so, originality may not be maintained already.
I'll check the tach.

for engine ID info. Vettes have code info AND the last part of the car's
serial number stamped into the pad on the block at the base of the right
head front end.

In addition to the engine code info, the 67 Vette would have the last
digits of its serial number also stamped into the pad sticking out under
the front of the right side head. That would show it to be the original
engine.
