    525i Cylinder Head Replacement

Just replaced a head on a 525i. (Brand new, not rebuilt) Put on new water
pump, timing belt, drive belts, thermostat, changed oil and coolant. Pressure
tested the radiator at 8 and 20, no leaks. Torqued head to specs in Bentley
Manual, but valves seem to tap a little. What specs should I use to get these
valves from tapping and quiet them down? Also, I'm getting a little white
smoke on startup, goes away after about 5 or 10 minutes of running. Think the
head needs more tightening down. What else should I look for as to what caused
the original head to crack in the first place. Only had 90K on it. Thanks for
    the help.

It would be helpful to know what year and/or motor it is. I'd guess it's
an M20 (from the comments about valve tappet noise), but it makes
a lot of difference if it's a 2.7 eta or 2.5i. A whole lot of difference if
    it's an M50.

Hi Floyd, I think you were the one that suggested that it might be the head
itself vs. the gasket. You were right on! There was a crack when we sent it
out for testing. Good thing we did that as we were ready to put the old head
back on and call it a day. It is a 1990 525i with the M20 engine. We are
wondering how the heck the head cracked when we didn't originally have a leak
that caused the engine to get hot. It seems that the head cracked causing
extra pressure in the system and then blowing out the drain screw at the bottom
of the radiator. Looking forward to your comments.

Did you change the cam? If the valves are adjusted properly and
it's way noisy it could well be a worn cam.

The whole top half of the engine is new. Came complete but we had to adjust
the valves. I don't think we got the right specs from a mechanic when we did
the adjustment. We also didn't do them in the order the Bentley manual
suggests. I have the correct order now and the proper specs. We'll try it
    tomorrow.
