Mitsubishi: 4G63 cylinder head replacement

4G63 cylinder head replacement
I need a new cylinder head for a 1997 L400 Space Gear (engine = 4G63
SOHC) and can't find one where I live in Lima Peru. This vehicle model
was not sold in the US so to import a new head I need to cross
reference the engine. Is "4G63 SOHC" all I need to know to order the
head? I'd hate to ship the thing down here and not have it fit. Any
suggestions on where to get a good rebuilt cylinder head would also be
appreciated.
Thanks.

The issue is the number of valves. The 2.0L 4G63 and 2.4L 4G64 SOHC up to
1992 have 8 valves with the plugs on the front side. From 93 onwards, the
4G64 SOHC has 16 valves with the plugs in the top. I'd guess that yours is
the later 16v type, with the distributor/ignitor on the transmission end of
the head.
The combustion chamber volume for the 4G64 is probably slightly bigger than
the 4G63 unless the 4G64 pistons are dished.
Point is, the 4G64 SOHC 16v head from a 95-99?) Galant will be compatible.
If anyone knows if the Galant came with a 4G63, then its exactly the head
you need for your SpaceGear. You could likely get away with a 4G64 head will
a 1mm reface of the surface.
Don't consider heads from 93 or earlier as these will likely have
compatibility problems eg size of studs, position of sensors and other
stuff.
Hope this helps.

Re: 4G63 cylinder head replacement
The cylinder head for your 8 valve 4g63 engine is common to the English
version of the Space Cruiser. Ensure that you replace both balance shaft
and timing belts correctly at the same time.
