328 Seatbelt Problem: Possible to repair?
My '87 328 has a problem with the seatbelts, and since Scottsdale Ferrari is
at present unable to locate a new set I am considering whether it is
possible to repair them.
Issue is only with the pay-out of the belt...it takes several minutes to
gradually extend the belt cm by cm far enough to buckle in place. In
essence, the device which locks the belt in place has become overly
sensitive...so it is functioning fine for safety purposes, it is simply a
pain (and time consuming) to get the belt on.
I see that Italian Car Parts offers a set of 328 seatbelts however they are
a bit pricy @ $500 USD. So before I head that direction, thought I'd ask
the troupe here to see if anyone had ever been successful in solving a
seatbelt problem as I've described above. After pulling off the leather
housing I can see no obvious was to dissassemble the seat belt unit, I
suppose for liability reasons they are simply not meant to be repaired. But
if a well-aimed shot of lithium grease or teflon lubricant--or maybe just a
blast of high pressure are to purge the grungies out--is what it takes, I'd
give that a go before parting with $500 + installation labor.
Thanks, Ted.

Ever though of losing some weight?
The 328 is not made for you fat burger eating yanks, lose a few pounds, do
your car a favour, eh?
tip, use the seat belts to restrict the food flow through your neck, i.e
wrap them tightly around your neck.
Should do the trick.

Re: 328 Seatbelt Problem: Possible to repair? [update]
Decided to take a stab at repair myself since replacements would be $500 +
installation labor...success!
These units can't be fully disassembled--the black plastic housing which
covers the gear mechanism is riveted in place. However I was able to pry
the black plastic cover loose from the top and bend it back far enough to
get a well-aimed shot of white lithium grease into the mechanism. Works
perfectly now, belt pay-out is easy but the mechanism does lock up properly
when the belt is yanked. Word of caution: these units aren't meant to be
repaired, in fact Scottsdale Ferrari refuses to do anything to the belts
owing to liability considerations. I am convinced that the unit is working
properly after repair, but use your own judgement here and proceed at your
own risk...

Re: 328 Seatbelt Problem: Possible to repair? [update]
Hi Matt,
I've been the beneficiary from alt.ferrari many times over 6 years of
ownership, figure it's about time I start paying back some debts
Hope some of this stuff helps others in their quest to keep their aging
Ferraris fully sorted.

I've been meaning to thank you as well, Ted. Myself and many of my
friends really enjoyed the pics from the Gauthier Classic (love those
wally-sized pics). Maybe now that I've moved to the Prescott area we
can hook up for a Scotch sometime (or whatever your poison is).

Glad you liked the Gauthier pics...I did get a little trigger-happy that
day, I must admit.
Had a chance to drive the new DB9 last weekend at the grand opening of the
Aston-Martin dealership which sits adjacent to the Scottsdale Ferrari
showroom. Nice driving experience--6L V12 and paddle shifting--but at a
buck seventy it is no bargain. Quite a contrast between driving this yacht
and my diminutive 328gts.
Hope we meet up sometime for Scotch drinking and Ferrari driving....er, but
not necessarily in that order.

I ahd the same issue on an '88 328. As others have eluded to already.
The cam needs to be lubed to help with sensitivity. be careful to not
get grease on the belts as well. I was shown this tip by a member of
my Ferrari club who used teflon spray instead of heavy weight grease.
As soon as summer came around his belts were stained...
