BMW: 325 fuel gauge

325 fuel gauge
I own a 1990 325i that I acquired sans owner's manual. Can anyone tell me
exactly how much is left in the tank when the indicator light comes on? I
have been living dangerously and driving for miles after it comes on...how
close to the brink am I coming?
Thanks...A.

My light comes on when my OBC shows 53km left if I recall correctly. I
once sputtered and died with 21km showing, (it refired but only barely and I
sputtered into a gas station) but I've also run it down to where it blinks
(15km or less) several times while still running fine. Come to think of it
my gas tank was replaced since then, even though the pumps were moved over.
YMMV.

Re: 325 fuel gauge
I ran a vehicle dry once and paid a hefty price. As the fuel pump sucked the
last few drops from the tank, it also sucked up all the dirt that had
accumulated in there over the years. In the process, it destroyed the pump.
By the time it was over, I spent over $500 for towing, labour & a new fuel
pump. Now I head for a gas station before the warning light comes on.

What sort of vehicle was it? I would expect most cars do not have this
issue -- I've run dry in most of the cars I've owned at least once, and
never had any ill effects.

That still does not mean that running dry is a good thing, though

Re: 325 fuel gauge
I can't speak for a '90, but the owner's manual for my '02 325i says that you
have approximately 2 gallons when the light comes on "continuously."

Re: 325 fuel gauge
It is generally considered a bad idea to run ANY vehicle bone dry unless
it's an emergency situation. Contaminants get into the gas and no one
really has any control over that. There are no filters for gas coming
into the car when you fill up, so whatever is in there (gunk, water,
etc.) just goes right in and settle in the bottom of the tank.
But why flirt with disaster? When you get low on gas just fill up!

Re: 325 fuel gauge
On the contrary, if you look inside a gasoline pump you will find
cartridge filters (they look like oil filters). Some pumps put a
filter outside to make it more obvious that the fuel is filtered,
but I have seen a bunch of them with their covers off, and I have
never seen a pump that did not have a filter.

Re: 325 fuel gauge
Contaminants that sink to the bottom of the tank are not the problem- they
are getting sucked through the engine no matter how full the tank is. What
you have to worry about is the contaminants that float. They accumulate over
time, never going through the fuel line unless you run the tank dry.
PS- BMW specifically recommends that you not run the tank dry.
