    31's on a 02 TJ sprot?

Hey all, since I bought my 89 YJ with 31's on it my neighbour has been
eyeing the tires, he has been running with the stock tires since he bought
his jeep. I was talking to him tonight and he said he was at Costco today
and they had a set of 31's there but won't install them on his jeep! they
told him there computer says that they are too big and will effect his
suspension too much so they will not install them. They did however say
that if the tires cam in not on anything then they could do it, but still
    did not recomend it.

So the questin is, is there anything to this? will 31's affect his jeep at
all, I can't see how, yes they are a bit bigger so they will weigh more and
steering might be effected a bit (if he cranks it all one way or the other)
but will it really effect the jeep?

    thanks
    Brent

I got the same jive at BJs when I bought my tires there. It is not in the
book so they would not do it to cover their buttocks. I went for the 235s
anyway (narrower in for the snow - 29.5 inch diam), but I had that
conversation with him as I was trying to price them all out.

If I really wanted the 31s I could have just brought in the rims I suppose.
31s do fit but might rub when fully turned. There is a remedy for this
which involves shortening the steering travel just a bit with a washer. I
bet someone posts a link to that fix.

I had 31's on my 02X before I traded it for my 05 Unlimied Rubicon. Had to
use a washer on one side, other was fine, it just changes the steering stop.
Had no problems with suspension, and took it off-road without any problems,
however I don't do any serious stuff. If no one posts a link for the
steering stop, goto rec.autos.makers.jeep+willys and you will get a link
    real quick.

Forgot to mention the stock tires on the Rubicon equate to a 30.5", so
Chrysler thinks it is ok to put larger tires on stock vehicles.

I bought 31's for my CJ when it was stock and went through the same thing.
Take your business somewhere else. That's what I did. There are plenty of
tire shops around that will install them. Now I have 34" Swampers on my CJ
(with spring lift) and they really rub. The cure?? Don't turn so sharp. The
rubber thumping on the spring is a great alarm to tell you to back off the
steering. Little bit of steering loss is a good compromise for ground
clearence I say!! If you can't get around it, drive over it!!

    just my $.02

    Following "Tread Lightly" I see.

IMHO I think you are unsafe on the road/trail.

    Sorry

    Andy.
