Jeep: 2001 Cherokee - Poor gas mileage

2001 Cherokee - Poor gas mileage
I have a 2001 Jeep Cherokee with 31,000 miles on it.
I really like it except that my MPG is awful... around 10/11 MPG city driving
(about 98% of my driving is in the city).
Does this sound right?
What can I do to boost my fuel economy?

Sounds a little low, but yup jeeps is thirsty critters!
Some (cheap) fuel economy tips that may help...
-Keep your tires at the correct pressure and keep your wheels alligned
(You wouldn't believe how much impact this has on your gas mileage)
-Blow out your air filter with some compressed air (or replace it).
-Pull your spark plugs and check them, replace if necessary. Make
sure you have a torque wrench to put them back 'cause you REALLY don't
want to over tighten them.
-In many jeep models the A/C compressor is running anytime you have it
set to "defrost" when the temp is above freezing. I don't know if
your model does this but if it does you can be killing your city gas
mileage without realizing it.
-Check the tension of your serpentine belt. Too tight can affect
mileage and also cause a lot of unnecessary wear and tear.
-Check your engine thermostat. If the engine is running too cold it
can also do a job on your gas mileage.
-Have you ever changed the tranny fluid (and the transfer case fluid)?
If not you are LONG overdue.
-Check the fluid in the front and rear diffs too while you are under
there just to be complete <grin>.

Re: 2001 Cherokee - Poor gas mileage
Is your jeep stock?
What type of foot do you have......? for example it takes 90% more gas
to go from 0 - 20 mph then from 20 - 50 mph.
First look to make sure you jeep is tuned up. Then start to look at how
you drive. I have a heavy foot and can see a huge change when use a
light foot.
the most you will get is 15 in the city
Jeep = Jest Empty Every Pocket
the other question is why do you have a jeep for the city?

I've a 89 with the PVC built into the value cover. I had
major leaks, when fixed, gas mileage improved 10%.

Depends on how heavy your foot hits the gas pedal.
1. Tape a raw egg between your foot and the gas pedal.
2. Use a quad hook and rope, hitch a ride from the passing BMW.

Re: 2001 Cherokee - Poor gas mileage
Tires could be a big thing - I switched mine on my '88 from the off-roaders
it came with to car tires (the bare minimum in the owners manual) and got
4mgp back.
With the 4.0L, I'm getting 16mgp city, 22mgp highway.

Sounds about like an S-Blazer with 4.3 that I was car-sitting recently.
A mechanic had found a legitimate and significant problem (dying fuel
pump) but was stymied in the attempt to really perfect it. I nosed
around the engine in vain a couple of times over a few days myself, but
eventually found about 3/8" dia. of metal vacuum line open to the air
in an obscure place near the back of the engine. Reuniting it with the
rubber hose that was supposed to go on its end improved the idle,
eliminated the stumbling-on-acceleration problem, and quite noticeably
upped the gas mileage.
While the Cherokee is a vehicle of substance and has a good-sized
engine, neither of which is in the formula for stop-and-go efficiency,
10 mpg seems quite a bit too low unless you really have to show some
class to the Camaro in the next lane at every green light... or there's
something wrong with the vacuum integrity, state of tune, engine
controls, transmission/clutch, or other mechanical factors that can
affect mileage. The government seconds my intuition that you should
see mileage in the mid teens around town:
