    2000 Expl O/D Tranny Problems

    Anyone,

I have a 2000 Explorer XLT 4.0 SOHV with automatic transmission.
When the tranny shifts from 1st to 2nd gear it hesitates
then shifts into 2nd hard. This has happened a couple of
times and now the tranny kicks out of overdrive. The "O/D OFF" light on the dash starts blinking steady. What could be the cause of this? Any insight would be appreciated.

oil is clean and at level, no fuses blown, voltage is slightly over 14 volts charging when motor running.

The flashing OD light is an indication that the PCM can help diagnose this
concern..... AutoZone or such *may* be able to retrieve the codes - all scan
tools are not created equal and my only experience is with high end units.

All the same, I get the feeling that we will only see shaft speed codes
which will lead us to hydraulic or mechanical problems..... but we wont know
    until we look.

You fail to mention trans fluid level, colour and odour....... have you
    checked????

    Hi Jim,

Level of fluid is OK. Smells a little, not strong.
I have a correction, it hesitates to shift from
2nd to 3rd gear. When it does shift, it shift hard
when accelerating. Also, When driving along in fourth
gear the engine seems to be restricted, no power to
accelerate. Could this be Catalytic Converter or fuel
filter causing this? Or something worse?

    Thanks in advance,
    simon

Yes, engine performance concerns can appear to be transmission trouble......
but before you go too far afield, there is still that pesky , flashing O/D
liight. The transmission is trying to tell you something and it's likely in
your best interest to listen. Whatever it is trying to say, may be a
valuable clue as to where to apply your diagnostic efforts.

    Jim,

    Got a reading..... PO733 - 3rd gear problem. Seems
the transmission is slipping shifting from 2nd to 3rd
gear. Could this be the 3rd gear clutch? Nevertheless,
transmission overhaul is on the cover of this novel....

    Thanks for your help,

    simon
