    2000 Eclipse Question

    Hey guys,
I was thinking about purchasing a 2000 Eclipse GT 6cyl from this guy by
me. Right now the price is at 9.5k. The car's got 63k miles on it. Do
you guys think thats a fair price for it? Also, are there any problems
I should be aware of with this car? I noticed a few complaints around
the web about rust and the wheel rims giving out or something.(can
someone clear this up?) Being a college student I dont exactaly have
lots of money to spend so this is going to be a big purchase for me and
I dont want to see something going wrong with this car in like a week
    leaving me screwed! Thanks!!

There is a website out there that contains nothing but complaints. Try this
website, this guy had some bad luck...

    Re: 2000 Eclipse Question

The brakes are junk and customers have been complaining about them for
    years.
Many posters to this group belive the warping issues are related to improper
wheel installation. While that can contribute, it's really just that they
    suck.
The wheel problems are also widely documented and go back even to the
previous Eclipse. For the Eclipse in question there is an active class
action suit because the wheels are butter-soft and so easily damaged.
There were huge numbers of these cars "dumped" on the market with a 0%
financing program, finding a deal shouldn't be too tough.

You would be better off with a 1 or 2G. The 3G is crap. Even stock, the 2G 4
cylinder turbo had more torque than the 3G V6.

What have you guys heard about that whole 'bent rim'
thing? If they did get bent, how much do rims cost to replace?

    Re: 2000 Eclipse Question

I was quoted over $400 by my dealer. I'ts fine in the summer, but in the
cold Minnesota winters, the bent rim tends to lose air, so I'm probably
going to have to break down and buy a replacement this year.

Yes, thats sounds about right. Manufacturers alloy rims are always 2-4 times
more expensive than similar (and often better) aftermarket products. Its
outrageous of course, esspecially when they are sometimes made by the same
company that provides aftermarket products. Case: 2003 Acura RSX alloy
wheels are listed at C$600 each.

Manufacturers alloy rims are a wonderful high profit margin item for the
    dealer.

The main issue is that aftermarket products generally don't come in the same
standard width, only wider. The Eclipse has 6x16 or 6.5x16 wheels. Most
    aftermarket wheels start at 7x16.

Most people look at the prices of the OEM wheels and then buy aftermarket.

Yeah, and with the 1G or 2G, you have the high failure rate of the ECU's.
If you want to know about any recalls or TSB's on this vehicle, write
down the VIN, then go to the dealer and ask for them to do a VIN search
    for outstanding issues.

The VIN is important because not all recalls/TSB's apply to all vehicles
in a model range. Some TSB are nothing more than emission label
    placement changes.

Personally, I like the car and have had zero problems. It doesn't have
the output power of my 6.6 liter Cougar XR7, but then the gas mileage is
    a lot better.

The resale value will drop faster than say, a Honda, but then you'll be
buying it for less than a Honda.

Locally, my sons have had the curb rash repaired on their rims for less
than $200.00 CDN. That included medal replacement, machining,
    balancing, and clear coating.

Oh, and by the way, son number one replaced his worn 1992 Honda engine
at 240,000 Km, son number 2 has over 270,000 Km on his 1991 Mitsu
engine, and it's still going strong, and doesn't burn oil (but he's on
    ECU number three).
