Pontiac: 1998 Grand AM Brake/ABS problem

1998 Grand AM Brake/ABS problem
I have a 1998 Grand Am with an ABS and Brake light on the dash that will not go
out. Brakes have been bled, and fluid level is good. ABS does not work, brakes
work fine. Pads and shoes are good. Battery was disconnected for a while to
clear codes. Disconnected all wheel sensors, sensors on the ABS unit, and on
the master cylinder. Nothing has changed. Autozone told me to jumper the wire
going to the master cylinder to see if the light goes out, and if not, jump the
one on the emergency brake cable. It only has one wire. Niether idea worked.
They also said put a meter on each wheel cylinder and spin the wheel to see if
I get voltage. Do these ideas sound right? Any other suggestions? I am at a
loss here. Thanks
George

You will save yourself a lot of time and stress by just
having the ABS scanned for codes. Otherwise, you
are just shooting in the dark.

Re: 1998 Grand AM Brake/ABS problem
Ian is correct. The reason the warning lights are on and the Anti-loc
isnt operative is that the system has detected a fault and disabled the
Anti-loc sys- tem ,returing it to what is called foundation brakes,
or brakes that SHOULD work normally without the anti-loc feature. The
best bet is to go to a good repair shop and let them scan it to
find the problem. They will probably charge you for a scan test, but
otherwise you will just be wasting time trying to find the problem.A lot
of the time it is due to a faulty wheel sensor.

It is often cheaper to have brakes fixed than to pay for a funeral
